Welcome Student Dramaturgs!

New and exciting happenings are being added to Region 1 Dramaturgy for Festival 42.

DIVE IN!
Students can sign up to be guerrilla dramaturges when they arrive at the festival.

If you have worked as a dramaturg at your college during spring or fall 09 you will have opportunities to showcase your dramaturgy work, meet dramaturgy professionals, and have your work responded to for consideration of the LMDA/KCACTF National Award and the new ATHE/KCACTF Regional Award.

You are also invited to collaborate with student directors, designers and playwrights in “process” workshops and learning activities designed to strengthen skills and knowledge of the work of production and educational dramaturgs.

An excellent resource to learn about Dramaturgy and the responsibilities of a Dramaturg is the Dramaturgy Student Handbook on line at
http://www.lmda.org/blog/LMDAMemberGroups
/UniversityCaucus

This handbook was compiled by Region 1 Dramaturgy Chair, Magda Romanska, Ph.D., Head of Theatre Studies and Dramaturgy Advisor at Emerson College, Boston, MA.

Follow the links to learn about the student dramaturgy initiatives, criteria, guidelines and application process.  Note the deadline for applications is December 7. 2009.
Student dramaturges working with productions opening after December 7, 2009 are to submit electronic materials immediately upon the close of the production.

Please feel welcome to contact me with any questions, and I look forward to seeing you at the University of New Hampshire, January 26-31, 2010!

All my best,

LMDA / KCACTF Student Dramaturgy Initiative(National Award)

The LMDA / KCACTF Student Initiative is a National Award designed to recognize contributions by student dramaturgs to the conception, development, and production within their colleges and universities, or to educational projects in dramaturgy.  Both LMDA/KCACTF believe that the dramaturg should participate fully and uniquely in the collaborative act of making theater and in promoting social discourse around the theatrical event.  This award validates the significance of the dramaturg's contributions and raises awareness of dramaturgy in the academic field.

What the National Award Entails

The LMDA / KCACTF Student Dramaturgy Award will be presented at the Awards Ceremony on the closing night of the Festival.  The student dramatrug will receive a cash prize, and membership in LMDA.  The winner will also be invited to the KCACTF National Festival in Washington, DC, April 12-18, 2010, to participate in weeklong workshops, to become eligible for the KCACTF National Dramaturgy Award and win a summer internship at the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference

Who is Eligible

Undergraduate or graduate students who serve as the lead production or educational dramaturg for an associate or participating entry during the current festival year (January-December 2009) are eligible for the national award.

If this is a workshop project or unrealized production, then you must be credited as the lead production dramaturg. A student dramaturg who also writes, directs, designs, performs in, or otherwise collaborates on a project is responsible for articulating the boundaries of the dramaturgical work and speaking on its behalf. Entries by dramaturgical teams are welcomed.  Please be sure to account for the work of each individual on the team.

You must deliver your Dramaturgical Protocol Binder to Festival 42, appropriately display the project, be prepared to give a 10-minute presentation on your work and receive response feedback in order to be considered for advancement to the national festival in Washington DC.

LMDA/KCACTF Dramaturgy Presentation

Only Student dramaturgs competing in the LMDA/KCACTF Dramaturgy Initiative will be asked to give a ten-minute presentation of their process stating how the production was enhanced by their dramaturgical analysis and research.  They should discuss the impact the dramaturgical collaboration had on the audience or the artistic team, as well as how this project informs, challenges or advances the field of dramaturgy, in general and/or with the student's school.  They are asked to be prepared to discuss active intellectual and artistic involvement in the preparation and interpretation of the text with the dramaturgy respondents.

Guerrilla Dramaturgy
Debuting at Festival 42 is Guerrilla Dramaturgy where student dramatrugs will receive a crash course in everything from production and educational dramaturgy, facilitating audience talk backs to theatrical collaboration to new play development – all in one activity.  In cooperation with NPP, dramaturgs conduct research relating to a new play and then collaborate with playwright, director and actors on a public reading of the play.

Guerrilla Dramaturgs do not need to bring anything to the festival other than intellectual curiosity and a desire for an exciting collaborative experience. (A laptop is useful, but not required.)  They will be given their assigned play the first night and will be part of that play’s production team for the rest of the festival.  The research will be done at the University of New Hampshire, using the resources of the library.  Guerilla dramaturges will also have ample time to participate in other workshops and festival activities.

Students can sign up to be guerrilla dramaturges when they arrive at the festival or use the on-line LMDA/KCACTF application form – CLICK HERE
